I'm Out! - well, as far out as I can get anyways.

In the fall of 2010 I had finally had it with my affiliation with the CTA and NEA. As a public school teacher in Yorba Linda, CA, the fact that my $103 a month over 10 months every year was going to support the activities of organizations that support everything that I find unwise and in many cases immoral, had finally eaten a hole in my stomach. I filed my papers with the CTA and my local and requested to be made an "Agency Fee Payer". This means that although I still must pay my union dues (being a public school teacher in CA is like living behind the Iron Curtain - you either join or or you don't work), each Oct. I will recieve a check that is supposed to represent that portion of my dues that the CTA spent on political purposes. Last year I received a check that was basically 35% of what I "contributed". I don't trust that this is accurate, however. Unions are very good at disguising what they do to look non-political. With all that is going on in Wisconsin, teachers should know that years ago the Public Sector Unions there created their own insurance company which all public employees pay into at a much higher rate than other private insurance providers. The money they make going to all sorts of nefarious policital activities. There certainly is "sin" in Wisconsin!

What Healthcare Means for Your Liberty

The following is a letter to the editor printed on Sunday March 28, 2010 in the Orange County Register, serving Orange County, CA. The author is a student of mine, Breanna Adams (age 14).

“The Democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not” – Thomas Jefferson

This is exactly what the House of Representatives did when they passed the government takeover of health care. When you mandate that every American must have health insurance whether they need it, want it, or not, that is a government takeover.

Last Sunday was a sad day. It tore our country in two: those for health care and those against it.

Why couldn’t the Democrats have been patient and waited for a bipartisan bill? The fact that they won this without a single Republican vote is not a bragging right. If this is going to affect every American, every American should be able to agree on it.

Now, on another note: Not one person who voted for this bill can ever call themselves pro-life.

My thoughts on the subject:
We have lived under a welfare state for over 70 years now. Dating back to the so called “New Deal”, Americans have grown dependent on government to provide their every desire - to satisfy their every want. Americans have grown to expect that they have as much as any other person in society, and that they are enlightened to and have a right to posses whatever anyone else may posses. Some call this equality, some call it social justice, and those who understand it as it really is call it socialism – the redistribution of the property and assets of millions of people into the hands of others whom the government deems as “needing” something. When someone takes your property from you without your consent, you call it stealing. When the government does it, it is called taxation. Only because it is done in accordance with a law that has been passed is it not called stealing. But when the government does this and then gives what is yours to another person instead of using it to benefit the society as a whole, then it is nothing less than the redistribution of your labor and the property that you earned – Socialism.

Last Sunday (March 21, 2010) was a sad day for America. From that day forward, all working Americans now work for someone other than themselves. Remember, "A government big enough to give you everything you want is a government big enough to take from you everything you have.” – President Gerald Ford - 1974

A Poem inspired by the Climate Cultist Al Gore

An original poem inspired by Nobel Laureate, Al Gore
by Andrew Spoonhower

What has happened to America?

One fat Friday soon to arrive.

A marzipan president.

Speaks of change.

Clouds of taffeta,

And cellophane sky.

The four horse men burrow down,

On a shinning city on a hill.

Frothy mouthed politicians,

Unbridled money spenders.

Quills full of arrows,

Forked tongued hypocrites.

George Washington’s bones dissolving.

A carbon offset must be purchased.

America has receded

into a sea of envy

and gentle supplications.

Green the new religion.

Democratic kindling has been gathered

Awaiting the hungry lighting strike

The shepherds of our republic shed their tears

Revolution is at hand

Common sense is to be had

Our hour of decision has arrived

Consequences are to be had

Tread lightly into that,

Dark and dreary night.

Note: Mr. Spoonhower is a dear friend and colleague of mine and poetry is one of his pastimes

Now as for me, all this global warming nonsense should be put to rest. It seems pretty obvious now that the “statists” are simply looking for a way to grab power and make money at the same time. As a result we will all suffer. Watch this Youtube video for more specific evidence of the Climate Cultists grab for power and determination to ruin society as we know it.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NU4gZdNut74&eurl=http://www.ufo-blog.com/other_video_footage/conspiracy_theories

What’s Really Wrong with the Government?

There is no doubt that something is broke when it comes to California’s government. The courts make laws, the governor makes the news, and the legislature makes no sense. Some have called for a Constitutional convention to fix California’s government, however that is not what is broken, either here or in Washington DC. Constitutions are written to control government, to limit the power of those who rule over us, and protect the rights of the citizens. We are safer when government is small and does little. Now don’t get me wrong, there is certainly a need for government, but that should be limited to protecting citizens from outside invasion, from crimes committed by other citizens, and regulating economic activities that are fraudulent, monopolizing, or lead to immoral behavior (commercial gambling, pornography, drugs, obscenity, and alcohol).

The problem here in California and in Washington DC is that government has attempted to do much more than it was intended. This is the result of two forces – greed and a sense of entitlement. People have increasingly expected government to provide whatever they need. Some go so far as to say that everyone should have the same things - a house, a job, lots of money, health insurance, vacations, the best education at the best universities, etc. and they say that the government should provide it. After all equality means we all have the same “amount” doesn’t it? The demands of these voters when coupled with the greed of your average politician is a deadly combination. Elected officials hear voters say they are entitled to these things and recognize right away that they can get elected and re-elected by promising and fulfilling promises to provided what government was not intended to provide in the first place. Representing the people of this state and this country was never meant to be a full time job or a way to get rich or even provide for your family. It was meant to be a part time job – a position of honor because of your sacrifice to your community, state, or country.

This leads to government borrowing money and increasingly taxing citizens and businesses to obtain the funds necessary to redistribute to those who have less than others. Again, don’t get me wrong, I want everyone to be as well off as they possibly can, but not at the expense of others. To do so is a violation of one groups rights to provide things to others and is immoral by its very nature. The things of this world are not rights or privileges, they are the result of hard work and sacrifice by some. Everyone has the opportunity to possess the same things, but only through the same hard work and sacrifice.

So what does CA and the country need to learn? LIVE WITHIN YOUR MEANS! Yes, that does mean some will not have what others do. Some will live in a house, some will live in nicer homes, some will live in apartments, and some will live on the streets. No it isn’t nice to think about. Who will help them you might ask. Well the Founding Fathers most likely would say – Someone other than the Government!

Citizens – change your behavior first – set the example – and then send a clear message to your representatives – LIVE WITHIN YOUR MEANS!

Health Care - NOT a Right

America is the land of freedom, equality, and opportunity, but in all cases we the people are limited and it is these limits which provide for the continued protection of our rights. We are a people bound by law and our government was created under the same set of laws. We posses equal rights, yet some say that they are not equal when some have health insurance and others do not. Equal rights cannot guarantee equal possessions, just as equal opportunity cannot guarantee equal outcomes in our endeavors. At least this is how our Founding Fathers envisioned our society. That which obligates one group of people to provide something for another, simply because they do not have it, cannot be called a right. Doing so violates the rights of some in order to provide for others. Why did we not see our Founders promote such an idea in our Constitution or in their personal writings? It is precisely because the redistribution of wealth, which in itself is the result of a peoples freedom, equality, and opportunity, does more harm than good. It violates the rights of some to provide for the equality of things for others. If forced to do this dreadful thing, we can say goodbye to the freedom, equality, and opportunity that we all have come to love and many have sacrificed dearly to preserve. As for me and my house, we say – “Don’t Tread on Me”!

CA Passes an IQ Test

The CA Special Election on May 19, 2009 was an IQ Test. Congratulations CA you passed! Were we to let those in Sacramento continue to waste our money by spending it on needless programs that only assist special interests, social programs, and things that really aren't the responsibility of government at all? Were we to encourage our lawmakers to borrow more money or tax the citizens of our state only to turn around and blow it? Perhaps, now they will do what they should have been doing for several years - CUT the Budget! This all comes from a public school teacher who is tired of hearing teachers, fireman, police officers, and other state employees preach that "they, in some way, should be exempt" from the pain and suffering that so many other Californians and Americans have had to deal with over the last year. When will our government learn to live within its means as most Americans do? Yes, part of our problem is that many people don't know how to live within their means. They borrow and use credit as if it is cash to satisfy their materialistic pangs. If you can't control your own pocket book, how do you expect the government to control theirs? We all have a lot of work to do!

Eulogy for my Dad - April 19, 1945-Feb. 21, 2009 - died of ALS (Lou Gherig’s Disease)

Not a day goes by that I am not reminded of something my dad taught me. What I do now stems from his love of politics, history, and philosophy. My dad taught me that to call myself a professional is one thing, but I must also look and act like one, so I have worn a tie to work now for 15 years. He taught early on that there are many things that people hire others to do that I could do myself. He showed me and gave me the opportunity to learn that hard work - physical work- is very gratifying. Together we grew to see that laughing often and loudly is good for you - very good. Perhaps the greatest lesson I have learned, however, was the result of his illness, and he not only taught me but everyone with whom he came into contact.

ALS is an insidious disease. To lose control of all your muscles, but still be clear of mind is cruel. Yet through all of it, my dad’s positive attitude was infectious in and of itself. He was able to find joy despite his illness; joy in others, joy in simply gathering together with others, and joy in traveling anywhere to anything despite the hindrance of his wheelchair. This joy drew others to him despite his circumstances and this became his opportunity to minister to others and lead them to a greater understanding and appreciation of God’s Grace in times such as those he went through.

James chapter one reminds us to “count it all joy when you fall into various trials”. Why, because the testing of your faith produces patience. Those who faithfully endure this testing will receive the crown of life. I am confident my dad has received his.

Our dad taught all of us to love, serve, and persevere. We suffered as he suffered and are better for it. He did it all with an incomparable attitude, and we therefore learned the rich blessings of having family close by. For these things I will be eternally grateful.

Why so much homework?

Increasingly, parents are complaining that there is entirely too much homework given to kids today. When do they get to play, spend time with family, etc. Well, I am one of them. The amount of homework stems from the fact that as teachers in CA, we are required to teach something called the "content standards", a comprehensive list of what students should know by subject and grade level. You can find them on-line (type in "CA content standards" in Google). These must be taught and students assessed all prior to the standardized testing that takes place in the Spring. To make matters worse, the social science standardized test for 8th graders covers the standards for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. Mind Numbing , I know. So, now back to my original statement ("I am one of them"). With our schedule chage here at BYMS (we are now out at 3:30PM daily), how is a child supposed to get home, get to soccer/volleyball/baseball/basketball practice, and ever find time to do their homework? I understand. I struggle with this in my own home. So, as a result, I am on a mission. It's back to the traditional way of doing things in my class - Class discussions and notes with an occasional piece of review work. I have already begun reducing the amount of homework and have seen positive results - both for my students and for me.

How do we solve the problem in more places?
We need to tell those at the State Dept. of Education that the standards need to be changed. Back to basics as I said before, but then again, that's me, traditional, conservative, and basic.
